THERE is probably no one image more symbolic of Japan than that of the geisha. Nowhere else in the world was the idea of the woman as professional entertainer and dancer, and sometimes courtesan, so richly refined, highly regarded, and profoundly developed.

Memoirs of a Geisha
All Geisha Girl - an exclusive Femail interview with Liza Dalby Liza Dalby is the only foreigner to ever beome a Geisha......
How would you compare the life of a 11th century geisha with that of 21st century geisha?
We need to be careful not to confuse Murasaki with geisha. Murasaki was an 11th century court lady—geisha were not part of Japanese society until the 17th century. They arose as entertainers in the licensed quarters of the major cities. In fact, the first geisha were men, and women didn’t dominate the profession until later. The real golden age of the women geisha was the 19th century. The most striking difference between today’s geisha and the past is that now no-one is forced into this life.

Это какое-то безумие!! Не правда ли? Вы узнаете Токио? )))
If Asakusa and Yoshiwara represented Tokyo's past, then the Ginza in 1903 represented the city's future. After a fire in 1872 leveled much of the backwater district, Ginza was fashionably, and famously, rebuilt as a showplace of Japan's rapid modernization. Among the earliest influences was Western architecture. For decades, brick, stone and concrete were more widely used along Ginza's famed boulevard than anywhere else in japan. Ginza served as an incubator for two of Japan's earliest manufacturers: comestic giant Shiseido was founded in a Ginza pharmacy in 1872, and Seiko, the famous watch-maker, was headquartered for many years in the Hattori (neé Wako) building at Ginza Crossing (Ginza 4-chome). Mikimoto Kokichi also sold his first cultured pearls a few doors down from the Crossing. Ginza was also where Japan's first gas and electric lighting was installed. The country's first beer hall (the Ebisu, in 1899) and cafés (Café Plantan and Café Paulista, in 1902) were also established there.
